Homework and Independent Learning

As a school, we know that when used effectively, homework and independent learning beyond the classroom can impact significantly on progress.   To enable our students to do this, we set homework, provide independent learning resources, including access to carefully selected online platforms, and we teach study and revision skills.

Homework

We set homework that helps students develop their long-term memory and expand their knowledge further.  Homework includes:

  • Retrieval – Students are provided with resources that enable them to actively recall information from memory to enhance learning and retention.

  • Reading for purpose – We recognise that each subject has its own disciplinary approach to literacy. Students are set subject specific reading to develop their knowledge and understanding, using the specialised language for that subject.

  • Reading for pleasure – Additional reading will be expected alongside subject specific reading.  This supports vocabulary development and strengthens access to the curriculum.

  • Revision – All students will be taught specific revision techniques, which they can practice independently ahead of a planned Key Marked Piece.

  • Research – Research work is set to encourage intellectual curiosity.  Work will be linked to the current classwork or work that will be covered in the next lesson.

  • Reflection – Students are given the opportunity to consider the process they followed to create a piece of work, what they achieved and what they would do differently next time.

  • Online platforms – Subject specific work set to retrieve, consolidate or introduce knowledge e.g. ActiveLearn, Sparx Maths, Seneca Learning and Tassomai (see below)

  • Past paper questions – Questions set to confirm the knowledge acquired and practice the skills needed, particularly in Years 10 and 11.
