Study and Revision Skills
Study skills are important because they equip students with the tools to manage their time, understand and retain information, and perform well in assessments. They are the foundation for academic success and go beyond just preparing for exams—they apply to homework, projects, and everyday learning.
Developing strong study skills enhances learning, reduces stress, and builds a foundation for lifelong learning and future employability.
Students at Wolfreton School and Sixth Form College are supported in developing effective study skills by their subject specialist teachers.
KS4 students also benefit from additional support with study skills through their tutor time. The Study Skills programme is delivered by form tutors during Tutor Time, with a focus on equipping students with practical strategies and techniques that foster effective revision. Central to the programme is the use of metacognitive theory, which encourages students to reflect on their own learning processes. This approach helps students develop personalised revision strategies, build self-awareness about their study habits, and improve their ability to manage their time and resources.
Steps to effective revision
Step 1: WHAT to revise – RAG rating, prioritising, checking what you know.
Step 2: HOW to revise – revision techniques and activities
Step 3: APPLYING revision – practice questions/tests.
Step 4: REVIEWING revision – did it work? Implementing changes to the choice of activities.
