Partnership

Mr Derek Johnson

My relationship with Rushanje School was not planned and I suppose I became involved by accident.  I completed an application form as part of my role in Wolfreton’s BP Link and was pleasantly surprised when we won a donation to develop the Rushanje Partnership.  This was my first international experience of this type although I have been involved in  local community work for many years.
I communicate with Rusanje on a regular basis and I am always impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment of the staff and students. Our cultures and values differ and yet ironically are basically the same.  It is only our material possessions  and a few  thousand miles that separate us.  Whatever I have achieved for Rusanje is repaid with every email, picture and update I receive and I look forward to continued involvement in the partnership.

History of the Link

I was transferred to this school in Feb 2001.  When I was reading the files I came across the address of Wolfreton School.  There had been no communication for some time so I decided to write to Roy Cooke.  He wrote back and introduced me to Derek Johnson and he has continued to communicate to us by email and airmail and we are very grateful.

True our cultures differ but Uganda having been a British Colony, most of the values have a very close link with what Wolfreton values.  Material possessions, the level of civilisation and learning English as our main mode of communication brings out the biggest difference.

Our country is beautiful, especially the countryside where the school is located.  The weather is good and conducive.  The people  are poor but kind and hospitable.  You only need to come to visit us to appreciate the beauty of Uganda.

This relationship has helped us in a number of ways by boosting our building programme and equipped our science dept to know  more about the developed world.

Special thanks go to Ian Cluskey, Chris Roberts, Roy Cooke and Derek Johnson
