The Wolfreton Rushanje Community

Partnership

Page Index

Rushanje Girls Secondary School is located in the rural area of Kibingo-Bugamba-Rwampara-Mbarara District. The school started in 1985 under the headship of Mr Muhiga Kihemba.

At that time the premises were occupied by a primary school, but because of the need to educate girls from the rural surroundings, the local population decided to transform the school into a girls secondary school. It was deemed important to educate girls if the community was to achieve general development; hence the school motto “We are the future of the Nation”.

To date there are 230 students, 18 teachers and 10 support staff

The parents of the school depend on subsistence agriculture and have no other source of income, such that the dry season usually hits them very badly and they withdraw their students from the school because they cannot afford the fees. Some of them do not even see the value of educating girls. In order to increase enrolment the Board of Govenors recommended the enrolment of boys and later on, day students.

The school has a lot of potential, land for expansion, determined students and teachers, but few facilities......................................extract from the Rushanje Five Year Plan, Assumpta Turyasiimwa, Head Teacher 2001
