History

The History department forms part of the Humanities Faculty. History is a very popular subject with large numbers of students following History at GCSE and A level.  History lessons involve a wide range of activities including independent, paired and group work. Teachers use a wide range of materials in the classroom including written and visual materials and film clips to help students to gain a better understanding of the past. In History students develop many different skills including explanation skills, source work, analysis and evaluation.

Year 7 students are able to visit the Royal Armouries to learn about the life of a medieval knight.  In Year 8 or 9, students are typically offered the opportunity to visit the First World War battlefields in France and Belgium and in recent years, Year 12 students have visited London as part of their studies of Tudor England.

Key Stage 3 

In Years 7 and 8, students follow courses to fulfil the National Curriculum. The National Curriculum says:

“A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.”

At Key Stage 3 students can also be encouraged to read historical novels to assist their learning, such as Kevin Crossley-Holland’s Arthur and the Seeing Stone (Year 7), Mary Hooper’s Fallen Grace or Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful (Year 8). Students may enjoy watching or reading the Horrible Histories series.

Key Stage 4 

From September 2016, students will follow the Edexcel GCSE History specification.

Aims of the course:

The history course aims to stimulate and develop an interest in the past, and to enable you to understand how it affects and influences the present. You will need to use and interpret evidence, and seek to develop a wide range of skills and concepts which are of value to you both within and beyond the study of history. The approach emphasises enquiry on your part, both individually and in group situations, and we hope to encourage you to discuss and exchange opinions with your friends. You will also be encouraged to develop your own ideas and effective arguments based upon your use of evidence, as well as to express these views in written, spoken and visual form.

Course Content:

The course is in five parts:

  • Two depth studies:
  • A British depth study - Anglo-Saxon and Norman England, c1060–88.
  • Modern depth study - The USA, 1954–75: conflict at home and abroad.
  • A European or wider-world depth study (period study) – The American West c1835-c1895.
  • A thematic study involving the study of people, events and developments drawn from all time periods – Medicine in Britain c1250-present.
  • Historic environment – The British sector of the Western Front 1914-1918: injuries, treatment and the trenches.

* In September 2016, a three-year Key Stage 4 was introduced. Consequently, timelines will vary for the class of 2018 and 2019.

Assessment:

Assessment for the GCSE is carried out in 3 exams at the end of Year 11:

- Paper 1: Thematic study and historic environment – 30% of GCSE

- Paper 2: Period study and British depth study – 40% of GCSE

- Paper 3: Modern depth study – 30% of GCSE

Sixth Form Courses 

A Level History (AQA)

Aims of the course:

This course examines three areas:  The Tudors, Democracy and Nazism and a Historical Investigation.  Through these students develop skills in dealing with problems of bias and prejudice; identify responses why particular events happen and understand the role of individuals in shaping these events.

Course Content:

  • The Tudors:  England, 1485 – 1603

Consolidation of the Tudor Dynasty: English, 1485 – 1547

England: Turmoil and Triumph, 1547-1603

 

  • Democracy and Nazism: Germany, 1918 – 1945

The Weimar Republic, 1918-1933

Nazi Germany, 1933-1945

 

  • Historical Investigation (coursework)

3000 - 3500 words

Assessment:

Students beginning the A Level course in September 2017 will complete the linear A Level.  The course comprises:

  • 80% Examination
  • 20% Coursework

  • Make use of MyPLC, a mobile-based resource.  This online resource enables students to self-assess their progress about a specification related learning checklist. 
  • Read around the subject.  Developing independent skills is a must. Students are provided with a reading list designed to support their learning. The Library has many useful books and the internet can be used to research topics further. Textbooks and revision guides are also available to purchase from the school.
