Wolfreton Language College: Community Activities 2007-8

We provide an all year programme of beginners’ classes in French, German and Spanish for pupils in Years 5 and 6 of our five feeder schools. These courses have been taught in the primary schools by Wolfreton staff. It is intended to hand over gradually the teaching of languages to the schools’ own staff, under the Pathfinder scheme. We also run a Japanese course for pupils of Carr Lane School, and courses in Mandarin Chinese for Years 2, 3 and 4 in St Andrew’s, Acre Heads and Walkington Schools. In addition we hope to support the introduction of Italian in another of our feeder schools.

Family courses such as Japanese culture and calligraphy, and Spanish wine-tasting are now being offered (based in the primaries).

Our link school in Rushanje, Uganda has a feeder school which is keen to link with our feeder primary schools. We have passed the invitation to all 5 schools, and Derek Johnson has agreed to do a Rushanje presentation in primary assemblies.

We have “adopted” a primary school in Grimsby that needs support for MFL. The school is very well resourced but needs expert advice in terms of materials for years 5 and 6. (They have a very good soft-ware based course for years 3 and 4). Megan Pavey is to undertake the supporting role and will be visiting the school next week.

Ganton School has hosted an Asian cookery event, organised by Rama Banerjee – the head of the Hull and East Riding Hindu and Cultural Association.
